I think both our interpretations are valid. I’m not sure which one is more depressing. Neil reaching for life, finally experiencing it and then immediately losing it? Or is he too late to be redeemed even for a second? I prefer to see it as transcendence rather than resignation, but in Heat 2 a younger Neil vows to close his heart so maybe this is him letting it open (literally) again. Thanks for commenting!
